Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

NYPD scuba divers conducted a thorough search of a Central Park lake on Sunday, December 8, 2024, as part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The search focused on the area near where a backpack, believed to be connected to the suspect, was discovered. Photos and videos from the scene show divers communicating underwater as they meticulously examined the lake.

Law enforcement sources revealed that the firearm used in the killing was not found in the backpack, prompting the underwater search. The backpack reportedly contained Monopoly money and a jacket. As of Sunday morning, no official announcements had been made regarding any evidence retrieved from the lake.

Authorities believe the suspect escaped the crime scene by bicycle, heading to Central Park before taking a taxi to the Port Authority bus terminal. His presence at the bus terminal suggests he may have left New York City. The backpack, according to retired FBI agent Scott Duffey, will be subjected to forensic analysis, including tests for trace evidence such as hair, fibers, and DNA.

A reward totaling $60,000 has been offered for information that leads to the suspect's apprehension and conviction. The multi-state manhunt has entered its fifth day, with investigators considering the possibility that the suspect traveled to neighboring states like New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, or Washington, D.C.

Former homicide detective Ted Williams commented on the presence of Monopoly money in the backpack, suggesting it could be a tactic by the perpetrator to taunt authorities and exert a sense of control.
