Following reports of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fleeing the country amid a rebel takeover of Damascus, former President Donald Trump commented on the situation via Truth Social on Sunday. Trump declared Assad "gone," asserting that Russia, weakened by its conflict in Ukraine, had lost interest in supporting the Syrian leader. He estimated significant casualties on both sides of the Ukrainian conflict, advocating for a ceasefire and negotiations. Trump further suggested that both Russia and Iran are currently vulnerable, referencing Israel's military actions in relation to Iran. He also expressed hope for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, mentioning both Vladimir Putin and China's potential roles.

Syrian state television broadcast a statement from a group claiming to represent the "Operations Room to Conquer Damascus." They announced Assad's overthrow, the release of prisoners, and called for the preservation of state institutions within a "free Syrian state." While the location of Assad and his family remains unknown, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali admitted to being unaware of his whereabouts. Celebrations reportedly erupted in Damascus following the news. The ongoing conflict, spanning nearly 14 years, has pitted Islamist rebels against Assad's regime, aiming to end the Assad family's decades-long rule.
