Chinese tennis player Wu Yibing experienced a concerning health episode during his Wimbledon first-round match against 10th-ranked Frances Tiafoe on Wednesday. After dropping the first set and the initial two games of the second, Wu signaled he was having trouble breathing.
Medical personnel attended to Wu on the court before he left for further assessment, causing a 15-minute delay. Reports from ESPN commentator and tennis coach Rennae Stubbs indicated that Wu collapsed upon leaving the court.
Despite the unsettling incident, Wu returned to Court 3 to resume the match. However, the 25-year-old American Tiafoe ultimately secured the victory with a final score of 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4.
Ranked 62nd globally, Wu made his Grand Slam debut at the 2022 U.S. Open. Going into the Wimbledon match, he was considered the underdog against Tiafoe, a 2022 U.S. Open semifinalist.
Tiafoe's next match is scheduled for Thursday against Swiss player Dominic Stephan Stricker in the second round. Tiafoe is coming off a second-round loss at the Queen's Club Championships last month.
