The horrific incident of a woman being set on fire on a New York City subway has ignited public outcry and sparked demands for swift justice. Guatemalan national Sebastian Zapeta, 33, is accused of igniting the woman's clothing while on a Brooklyn train, leading to charges of first- and second-degree murder and first-degree arson.
Several prominent figures have voiced their opinions on the case, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who called for Zapeta's immediate conviction and execution, criticizing the potential cost of a lengthy trial. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) echoed the call for capital punishment.

Representative Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) connected the tragedy to broader concerns about policies related to crime, while NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the alleged attack, stating Zapeta used a lighter to ignite the victim's clothing and, according to Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg, fanned the flames with a shirt. Zapeta’s next court appearance is slated for Friday.

ICE confirmed Zapeta's previous deportation from the U.S. in 2018 and subsequent illegal re-entry at an unspecified time and location.
