NYC Congressman Demands Accountability for Antisemitic Act, Questions Mayor's Response

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

New York Congressman Ritchie Torres has publicly criticized Mayor Eric Adams for his handling of an antisemitic incident involving a city employee. The incident, captured on video, shows the employee tearing down posters displaying images of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas. Torres, a Democrat, argues that a mere fine is insufficient and has called for the individual's termination.

Torres expressed his stance via Twitter, stating that the message to antisemites should be clear: "You're fired." He reiterated this demand in a statement to Fox News Digital, emphasizing the need for zero tolerance for antisemitism in both word and deed. The Congressman believes that retaining such individuals in public service sends the wrong message and undermines efforts to combat hate crimes.

The individual in question was reportedly employed by the Mayor's Office of Special Projects and Community Events, an office tasked with celebrating the city's cultural diversity. Following the incident and subsequent public pressure, Mayor Adams' office announced the employee's suspension without pay pending further investigation.

This incident follows the horrific attacks by Hamas on Israel in October 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 individuals, including American citizens, and the capture of numerous hostages. The attacks have sparked widespread condemnation and heightened concerns about antisemitism globally.

Congressman Torres has been a vocal critic of what he perceives as lenient criminal justice policies and has recently hinted at a potential challenge to Governor Kathy Hochul. He has also condemned the rise in antisemitic incidents and anti-Israel protests within New York City. In addition to this incident, Torres has also criticized the early release of a repeat offender who was subsequently arrested in connection with a triple homicide, further fueling his call for stricter accountability within the city's justice system.

Mayor Adams has also recently called for increased state support in addressing issues related to homelessness and mental health, particularly in the context of public safety concerns.
