Super Bowl LIX End Zones to Feature "Choose Love" and "It Takes All of Us"

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

In a shift from previous years, the end zones at Super Bowl LIX will display the phrases "Choose Love" and "It Takes All of Us" instead of "End Racism." NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy explained to The Athletic that this decision was made in response to recent national tragedies, including a terror attack in New Orleans, wildfires in Los Angeles, and a fatal plane crash near Washington, D.C. The league believes these messages offer a source of inspiration during challenging times.

While "End Racism" was displayed during the Eagles' NFC Championship victory, the AFC Championship game, where the Chiefs defeated the Bills, already featured the new phrases. The "End Racism" message first appeared in 2020 following widespread social unrest and was present in the Chiefs' end zone during Super Bowl LVIII. The 49ers' end zone that year displayed "It Takes All of Us."

This change coincides with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's recent defense of the league's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. Goodell emphasized the NFL's commitment to DEI, stating it's not a fleeting trend but a core value that strengthens the league. He highlighted the benefits of attracting diverse talent both on and off the field and reiterated the league's commitment to these initiatives.

Goodell further explained that the league's DEI efforts reflect the diversity of its fan base, communities, and players. He referenced the Rooney Rule, emphasizing that while there's no mandate to hire based on race or gender, the league encourages considering a diverse pool of candidates that mirrors the communities it serves. He believes this practice ultimately leads to better hiring decisions and is being adopted by organizations worldwide.
