Massie and Lee Advocate for US Withdrawal from NATO

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie and Utah Senator Mike Lee have publicly expressed their desire for the United States to leave the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Their recent exchange on X (formerly Twitter) highlighted this shared stance, with Senator Lee posing the question and Representative Massie offering a resounding "yes" in favor of withdrawal.

This isn't the first time Massie has voiced this opinion. He has previously referred to NATO as a "Cold War relic" that outlived its purpose after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2022, he explicitly stated his intention to withdraw the US from the alliance if given the opportunity.

Senator Lee has also been a vocal critic of NATO, characterizing the alliance as advantageous for Europe but disadvantageous for America. He has repeatedly urged NATO members to increase their financial contributions and suggested that the US should seriously contemplate leaving the organization, regardless of whether other members meet their financial obligations. Lee's Twitter feed reveals several instances where he has endorsed the idea of a US withdrawal from NATO, even responding with enthusiastic affirmations like "Amen!" and "Let's go!" to others advocating for the same.

However, withdrawing from NATO is not a simple process. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024, signed into law by President Biden, stipulates that any decision to suspend, terminate, denounce, or withdraw the US from NATO requires either a two-thirds Senate majority approval or an Act of Congress.

Rep. Thomas Massie
