Manchin Labels Democratic Party as "Toxic" in Farewell Remarks

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

In a parting shot before his retirement, Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) has criticized the Democratic Party, labeling it "toxic" in an interview with CNN's "Inside Politics." Manchin, who transitioned from a lifelong Democrat to an Independent earlier this year, expressed his disillusionment with the party's direction.

He attributed this shift to progressive lawmakers, arguing they've steered the party away from core issues like job creation and fair wages, instead prioritizing social issues such as transgender rights. Manchin suggested this focus has alienated many Americans and that the Democratic Party is out of step with the nation's values.

Manchin also extended his criticism to Republicans, accusing them of being "too extreme" and lacking common sense, particularly on gun control. While advocating for responsible gun ownership, he criticized both parties for their extreme stances, with Democrats leaning towards bans and Republicans favoring unrestricted access.
