A new documentary, "Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story," delves into the life and loves of Liza Minnelli, the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli. The film, directed by Bruce David Klein, offers an intimate look at the entertainer's personal life, including her four marriages and divorces.
The documentary reveals that Minnelli's first marriage to Australian singer Peter Allen ended after she discovered his infidelity with another man. This revelation, according to the film, left Minnelli "truly devastated." Longtime friend Michael Feinstein asserts in the documentary that Minnelli was unaware of Allen's sexuality. Klein expressed surprise at Minnelli's willingness to discuss her private life in the film.

Despite the painful circumstances of their split, Minnelli and Allen maintained a close relationship until his death from AIDS in 1992. Klein suggests that their enduring bond stemmed from Allen's humor and undeniable talent, qualities Minnelli deeply admired. The film highlights Minnelli's resilience and ability to find humor even in difficult situations.

The documentary also touches upon Minnelli's subsequent marriages to Jack Haley Jr., Mark Gero, and David Gest, as well as her unfulfilled desire to have children. Klein portrays Minnelli as a resilient and loving individual, finding joy in her friendships and continuing to embrace life despite past heartbreaks. The film is currently expanding to theaters nationwide.
