Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been formally indicted on rebellion charges following his impeachment and subsequent arrest. The charges stem from Yoon's brief imposition of martial law in December 2024, a move that sparked significant political upheaval. While presidents in South Korea typically have immunity from prosecution, this protection doesn't cover accusations of treason or rebellion, offenses that could lead to life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
This indictment marks a historic moment, as Yoon is the first sitting South Korean president to face such legal action. The Democratic Party confirmed the indictment, emphasizing the gravity of the charges and the commencement of legal proceedings against Yoon for leading what they term an "insurrection."

Yoon's impeachment and arrest followed the controversial martial law declaration, which he defended as a necessary measure to address alleged obstruction and anti-state activities within the National Assembly. He characterized the assembly as a "den of criminals" and aimed to expose those he considered threats to national security. However, the National Assembly swiftly rejected the decree, forcing its withdrawal after a mere six hours. This unprecedented action in recent South Korean history evoked memories of past authoritarian regimes.
Yoon initially resisted attempts by authorities to detain him, leading to a standoff before his eventual arrest at the presidential compound. He has been in solitary confinement since his apprehension. Yoon maintains his innocence, asserting that the martial law declaration was a legitimate exercise of power.

Following a court's approval of an arrest warrant, Yoon's supporters clashed with police, resulting in injuries and arrests. Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on whether to permanently remove Yoon from office or reinstate him. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) initially led the investigation but transferred the case to Seoul prosecutors, requesting an indictment on charges of rebellion, abuse of power, and obstruction of the National Assembly.

Yoon's defense team has called for his release and an investigation into the CIO. Several officials associated with Yoon, including his defense minister and police chief, have also been arrested in connection with the martial law decree.
