Meghan Markle's path to entrepreneurship hasn't been without its challenges. The Duchess of Sussex initially launched her lifestyle brand under the name American Riviera Orchard in March 2024, but encountered trademark obstacles.
These issues stemmed from the brand name's similarity to existing trademarks and the use of a geographical location. The U.S. patent and trademark office rejected her initial application, citing the common use of "American Riviera" as a nickname for Santa Barbara, where Markle resides. Further complications arose with a protest from food and gift retailer Harry & David, who claimed the name was too close to their "Royal Riviera" product line.
Markle's team requested an extension to address these concerns, but ultimately, she rebranded to "As Ever" in February 2025. Despite these setbacks, Markle remains determined, viewing the experience as a learning curve.
While navigating these brand challenges, Markle has also been busy with other ventures. Her Netflix series, "With Love, Meghan," premiered in March 2025, showcasing personal stories and recipes from friends and chefs. Her husband, Prince Harry, makes a brief appearance in the final episode. A new podcast with Lemonada Media is also slated for a spring release. Markle's jam will be among the first products launched under the As Ever brand.
This entrepreneurial spirit echoes Markle's earlier foray into the lifestyle space with her blog, The Tig, which she shuttered in 2017. She now sees herself as a female founder and entrepreneur, with the potential for her brand to become influential.
Markle and Prince Harry continue to collaborate through their Archewell Foundation, while also pursuing individual projects. They are raising their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in Montecito, California.
