Detroit Tigers pitcher Matthew Boyd's season has come to an abrupt end due to the need for elbow reconstruction surgery. Tests conducted Tuesday confirmed a partial UCL sprain in his left arm, necessitating the procedure, often referred to as Tommy John surgery.
Boyd's injury became apparent during Monday night's game against the Texas Rangers. After just 15 pitches, he signaled discomfort in his elbow, prompting a mound visit from manager A.J. Hinch and the team trainer. With a 5-5 record and a 5.45 ERA this season, Boyd's absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Tigers.
The team has placed Boyd on the 60-day injured list. The typical recovery period for Tommy John surgery is 12-14 months, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the current season and potentially a significant portion of the next. The Tigers have not yet announced a date for the surgery.
Adding to Detroit's pitching woes, Will Vest, who replaced Boyd on Monday, also suffered an injury and was placed on the 15-day IL with a lower right leg strain. This brings the total number of Tigers pitchers on the injured list to a staggering ten, with half of them having started games this season. To fill the void, Matt Manning has been activated from the 60-day IL after recovering from a foot fracture, and reliever Anthony Misiewicz has been called up from the minors.
Boyd, 32, rejoined the Tigers this season on a one-year, $10 million contract after previously pitching for the team from 2015-2021. He spent last season as a reliever for the Seattle Mariners.
