A 17-year-old Baltimore resident has been detained without bail following his arrest in connection with the mass shooting that occurred at a block party on July 2nd. The incident tragically resulted in two fatalities and 28 injuries.
Law enforcement apprehended the teenager on July 7th after executing a search warrant at his residence. He now faces charges including possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of an assault weapon, reckless endangerment, and possession of a handgun in a vehicle. Reports indicate that a viral video allegedly showing the teen retrieving a gun-shaped object from his backpack played a role in his identification and subsequent arrest.

Despite lacking a prior criminal record and no weapon being recovered, the prosecution argued that the young man posed a significant threat to public safety, leading the judge to deny bail. This incident follows a year in which nineteen Baltimore public school students lost their lives to gun violence, raising concerns among parents about escalating gang activity and violence in schools.

The victims of the July 2nd shooting have been identified as 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi and 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene, while Fagbemi succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital. Over two dozen other individuals, including several minors, sustained non-fatal injuries. Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley has confirmed that the shooting took place at a block party in the Brooklyn Homes area, but authorities are still investigating whether the incident was a targeted attack or random act of violence. The FBI previously announced a $28,000 reward for information leading to arrests in the case.
