Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre has voiced his support for American ownership of U.S. farmland, echoing concerns about the increasing amount of agricultural land acquired by China. Favre shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) questioning China's ownership of 192,000 acres of American farmland and advocating for its return to American hands. He stated, "If true, Americans should own American farmland."
This concern comes amid reports of significant Chinese agricultural investment in the U.S., which reportedly grew tenfold between 2009 and 2016. Investigative journalist Sara Carter previously reported that the USDA estimated Chinese ownership of approximately 192,000 acres of U.S. land in 2019, with an additional $6.1 billion invested since March 2021. Carter's investigation also revealed Chinese-owned farmland near sensitive locations, including Laughlin Air Base in Texas and a nuclear site in Montana.
The issue of foreign ownership of U.S. farmland has drawn increased scrutiny from lawmakers. A Government Accountability Office investigation in January found that the Biden administration had not effectively tracked this data, raising concerns about potential threats to U.S. food and energy security. Bipartisan efforts have been made to address this issue, with Representatives Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and Blake Moore (R-Utah) proposing a plan to expand oversight of foreign real estate purchases.
Favre's advocacy on this issue aligns with his vocal support for former President Donald Trump. He actively campaigned for Trump, criticizing the Biden administration's policies and expressing concerns about various national issues.
