Armed Employee Thwarts Potential Mass Shooting in Las Vegas Apartment Complex

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A potential mass shooting was averted at an upscale Las Vegas apartment complex thanks to the swift actions of an armed employee. Surveillance footage captured the suspect, Andrew Warrender, approaching the lobby of Turnberry Towers, wearing a helmet and carrying an AR-15 style rifle. He fired at an employee, experienced a malfunction, and then aimed again without discharging a round. As Warrender attempted to exit, the employee, who was legally carrying a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun, shot him multiple times, subduing him until police arrived.

The incident, which occurred on June 23rd, initially received minimal media attention. This lack of coverage, despite video evidence of the event, raised concerns. Amy Swearer, a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation, questioned the seemingly subdued response, contrasting it with the typical media frenzy surrounding active shooter situations.

Initial reports were sparse, lacking confirmation of the employee's heroic intervention. Swearer criticized the lack of transparency from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, suggesting a potential downplaying of the incident due to the involvement of a "good guy with a gun." She compared this to other cases where armed citizens stopped active shooters, which garnered significant media attention, such as the incident at an Indiana mall involving Elisjsha Dicken.

Details emerged on June 28th with the release of Warrender's arrest report. It confirmed the employee's role and revealed that he was not required to carry a firearm but chose to do so. The report also stated that Warrender was known to employees as he frequently visited his uncle who resided in the complex. On the day of the incident, Warrender's behavior was described as unusual. He was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and illegally discharging a firearm.
