Abrams Downplays Trump's 2024 Win, Citing Divided Nation

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams recently discussed the 2024 presidential election on MSNBC, arguing that Donald Trump's victory didn't represent a significant shift in the political landscape. Speaking with Chris Hayes, Abrams emphasized the close nature of the election, pointing out that while Trump secured more votes, it wasn't a landslide. She highlighted the near-even split in the nation, stating that slightly less than 50% of the electorate voted for Trump, according to the Associated Press.

President-elect Donald Trump

Trump's victory saw him win all battleground states, alongside Republican majorities in both the House and Senate. His vote share increased nationwide, spanning from traditionally conservative areas to those typically leaning Democrat. Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged Trump's win, congratulating him and later delivering a concession speech. Many view this outcome as a clear message from the American public, expressing frustration with economic difficulties, border control issues, and immigration system failures.

Abrams also touched on the legacy of President Jimmy Carter, emphasizing the importance of decency in politics. She urged Democrats to broaden their understanding of decency to attract a wider range of voters. Abrams believes decency is a conscious choice, albeit a challenging one. However, she noted that when decency clashes with a lack of integrity, the latter often prevails because it's not bound by the same constraints. Despite this, she stressed the importance of upholding decency, arguing it demonstrates to those who remained silent or didn't participate in the election that there's a place for them and their values within the political system.

Abrams, who has twice run unsuccessfully for governor of Georgia, gained attention for initially refusing to concede the 2018 gubernatorial race against Brian Kemp, despite a 60,000-vote difference. While she has since stated she accepted the results, she previously claimed victory and suggested Kemp, then Georgia's secretary of state, implemented voter suppression tactics. Despite her losses, Abrams has been recognized for her work on election reform.
