Former President Donald Trump announced the nomination of Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan "Razin" Caine for the position of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday evening via Truth Social. Trump praised Caine's experience as a pilot, national security expert, entrepreneur, and highlighted his contributions to the fight against ISIS during Trump's initial term.
Trump lauded Caine's rapid and effective leadership in the campaign against ISIS, contrasting it with the predicted timelines offered by other military strategists. He also expressed his belief that Caine had been unfairly overlooked for promotion under the Biden administration.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth affirmed his support for Caine's nomination, emphasizing his leadership qualities and readiness to address current challenges. This appointment deviates from the norm of retaining the Joint Chiefs chairman during transitions of power. Both Trump and Hegseth acknowledged the service of the outgoing chairman, General Charles "CQ" Brown, expressing gratitude for his four decades in the military.
Hegseth has been critical of the impact of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives on military effectiveness, and he has previously suggested replacing top military leaders, including Brown. In his book, "The War on Warriors," Hegseth questioned Brown's promotions and leadership priorities.
Caine's extensive flight experience, exceeding 2,800 hours in the F-16 with over 100 combat hours, was also noted. Hegseth indicated that nominations are also being sought for the Chief of Naval Operations and Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, expressing appreciation for the service of the current incumbents, Admiral Lisa Franchetti and General James Slife. Hegseth has also previously voiced criticism of Franchetti's qualifications in his book. Caine's commissioning through the ROTC program at the Virginia Military Institute in 1990 and his Master of Arts in Air Warfare from the American Military University were highlighted.
The news of the leadership changes reached Brown during a visit to Fort Bliss and Franchetti while she was in Europe, prompting her return. Hegseth further stated that nominations are being sought for the Judge Advocates General positions within the Army, Navy, and Air Force, emphasizing the intent to install leadership focused on the military's core mission under President Trump.
