In a case that shook the Austin community, Jaclyn Alexa Edison received a 10-year probation sentence and 300 hours of community service for her involvement in a conspiracy to murder her husband's parents, the owners of Gallerie Jewelers. The sentencing, handed down by a Travis County judge, also mandates that Edison surrender her passport and spend two days in jail annually on the anniversary of the murder for the next decade.
Edison, 19 at the time of the crime, and her husband, Nicolas Shaughnessy, were accused of orchestrating the hit on Ted and Corey Shaughnessy in 2018. Driven by financial difficulties and the allure of a $2 million life insurance policy, Nicolas Shaughnessy hired Arieon Smith and Johnny Leon to carry out the murder. While Corey Shaughnessy survived the attack, Ted Shaughnessy was tragically killed in his home, and the family dog also lost its life. Both Smith and Leon, along with Nicolas Shaughnessy, who pleaded guilty in 2021, are currently serving 35-year prison sentences.
The investigation revealed that Nicolas Shaughnessy had borrowed $30,000 from his mother to launch a day-trading venture, leading to a dispute between them shortly before the murder. A search of Edison's phone uncovered conversations about a $2,600 loan to Nicolas Shaughnessy from a neighbor in 2017, further highlighting the couple's financial strains. Adding a layer of irony to the tragedy, Ted Shaughnessy's company had previously announced Nicolas Shaughnessy's intended succession as head of the jewelry store, with an obituary even referencing him as a "proud father to his son."
