Pittsburgh Mayor Refuses Collaboration with ICE, Advocates for Pathway to Citizenship

Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey has publicly declared his administration's refusal to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). During an address to the Pennsylvania Press Club, Gainey stated his commitment to making Pittsburgh a more welcoming city and expressed his belief that collaborating with ICE would not resolve the current immigration challenges. He argued that such actions would instill fear and insecurity within communities.

Gainey suggested focusing on legislative solutions and pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, questioning the political will to implement effective immigration reform. He reiterated these sentiments in an interview with CBS News Pittsburgh, emphasizing his desire to provide services and support for immigrants, creating a welcoming environment. He also indicated that Pittsburgh police officers are unlikely to work with ICE in the foreseeable future.

Gainey's stance aligns with several other sanctuary city leaders who have resisted the Trump administration's stricter immigration enforcement efforts. However, not all Democratic mayors share this view. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has confirmed his city's continued cooperation with ICE, emphasizing that individuals engaging in violent crimes forfeit their right to remain in the city and the country.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Gainey's office clarified that there is currently no evidence of ICE operations within city limits and that the city has not been requested to assist the agency. They emphasized that ICE operates independently of city control and that the Bureau of Police will adhere to its established policies.
