Biden's Preemptive Pardons Spark Outrage Among Republicans

Created: JANUARY 15, 2025

President Biden's decision to issue preemptive pardons to several individuals, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, Gen. Mark Milley (Ret.), and members of the House Jan. 6 committee, has ignited a firestorm of criticism from Republican lawmakers. These pardons were announced just before Biden left office, raising concerns about potential motivations and prompting calls for investigations.

Several prominent Republicans expressed their outrage on social media and in official statements. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas questioned the necessity of the pardons and suggested calling those pardoned before Congress to testify. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, now chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, reiterated his commitment to investigating Dr. Fauci's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia characterized the Biden administration as corrupt and accused them of attempting a cover-up. Rep. Doug LaMalfa of California echoed this sentiment, questioning what Biden was trying to hide.

In contrast, Democratic Rep. Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania applauded Biden's decision, arguing that it was necessary to protect public servants from potential political retribution by the incoming administration. He accused the former president of abusing his power and threatening political opponents.

The former president had previously hinted at retaliatory actions against his critics upon returning to office. Meanwhile, Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, who leads a subcommittee investigating the Jan. 6 committee, has called for the criminal prosecution of former committee vice chair Liz Cheney.

While the preemptive pardons have drawn considerable criticism, there is historical precedent. Former President Gerald Ford famously pardoned Richard Nixon after the Watergate scandal.

Both Fauci and Milley released statements expressing gratitude for the pardons. Fauci maintained his innocence and emphasized the distress caused by the threats of investigation. Milley expressed his desire to avoid future legal battles and focus on his family.
