Former Vice President Mike Pence's organization, Advancing American Freedom, has formally requested that Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood. In a letter to Musk, Advancing American Freedom President Tim Chapman emphasized the need to defund what he called America's largest abortion provider.

The Government Accountability Office reported that Planned Parenthood received roughly $75 billion in federal funds between 2019 and 2021, encompassing grants from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and various public health initiatives. According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, taxpayer money constituted 34% of Planned Parenthood's budget in 2022-2023.

Chapman expressed gratitude for DOGE's efforts to reduce government waste and suggested that defunding Planned Parenthood could be a defining moment for both Musk and President Trump. This request follows President Trump's recent reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy, which blocks federal funding for international organizations involved in abortion, and his executive order reinforcing the Hyde Amendment, preventing federal funds from being used for elective abortions.

In contrast, the Biden-Harris administration significantly increased support for Planned Parenthood's abortion services after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Planned Parenthood's 2022-2023 report indicated a record number of abortions performed during a period when the organization received $700 million in federal funding, alongside a decrease in other services provided.
