Fox News Taps Baier and MacCallum to Moderate First GOP Primary Debate

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Fox News has selected Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum to moderate the initial Republican presidential primary debate scheduled for August 23rd in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The network made the announcement on Tuesday, highlighting the anchors' extensive experience in covering major political events.

Fox News Media President Jay Wallace expressed pride in the selection, emphasizing the importance of the debate in informing American voters as they prepare to exercise their right to choose the next president. The debate will be held at the Fiserv Forum, the same venue chosen for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier

Baier, the chief political anchor for Fox News Channel and host of the highly-rated "Special Report," and MacCallum, anchor and executive editor of the leading afternoon news program "The Story," have consistently delivered top-rated coverage of key political moments, including President Biden's State of the Union address, the 2022 midterm elections, and the 2020 presidential election. Their collaborative coverage has consistently outperformed other cable and broadcast networks in viewership over the past five years.

This announcement follows the Republican National Committee's April declaration that Fox News would host the first debate. RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel underscored the significance of the event, stating that it would provide a fair and transparent platform for candidates to present their messages to the nation.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump

Scott Walker, former Wisconsin Governor and current president of the Young America’s Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the debate, viewing it as a valuable opportunity to engage young Americans with conservative principles. The debate will coincide with the RNC’s summer meeting, also scheduled to take place in Milwaukee.

Former President Trump currently leads the polls for the Republican nomination, potentially marking the first time the party has nominated the same candidate three times in a row. He faces competition from a growing field of candidates, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
