Rory McIlroy, typically a media-friendly figure, declined to speak with reporters after an unusual misstep on the 18th hole during the first round of the U.S. Open. His tee shot from the rough went awry, impacting his score and seemingly his mood.
Despite recovering to sink an 11-foot putt for bogey, McIlroy bypassed the customary media interaction, heading directly to the clubhouse. This avoidance followed his earlier cancellation of a pre-tournament press conference, adding to the intrigue surrounding his demeanor.
McIlroy has had a challenging year, publicly stating his desire to prioritize his role as a golfer amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. His responsibilities as a player director on the Tour’s Player Advisory Council, coupled with his vocal defense of the PGA, have undoubtedly demanded his attention.
He has acknowledged the difficulty of balancing these various roles, admitting to losing sight of the bigger picture at times. However, the recent agreement between the competing golf tours may allow McIlroy to refocus on his game.
His performance at the Los Angeles Country Club was noteworthy. A remarkable 30 on the front nine marked his best nine-hole score in a major championship. McIlroy was among a select group of players who shot 65 or better, a significant achievement in the opening round of the U.S. Open.
While the whiff on the 18th was an unexpected setback, McIlroy’s overall performance suggests he remains a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.
