Maine Family Challenges State Tuition Program Restrictions on Faith-Based Schools

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

A Maine family, Keith and Valori Radonis, are challenging state regulations that prevent them from using public tuition funds for their children's education at St. Dominic Academy, a Catholic school. The family resides in a rural area without public schools, making them eligible for Maine's Town Tuitioning Fund. However, recent amendments to the state's human rights law, requiring religious neutrality in schools receiving state funds, have created a barrier for families wishing to utilize the program for faith-based education.

The Radonis family, along with St. Dominic Academy, have filed a lawsuit against the state, arguing that these amendments infringe on their right to choose a faith-based education for their children. They contend that the state is creating obstacles to circumvent the Supreme Court's decision in Carson v. Makin, which ruled that Maine could not exclude religious schools from the tuition program based solely on their religious affiliation.

The Radonis family believes the state is redefining the criteria for eligibility by requiring religious neutrality, effectively excluding faith-based schools. They emphasize that the funds are taxpayer dollars being returned to families in areas without public schools, empowering them to choose the best educational setting for their children. The family argues that providing these funds to families choosing faith-based schools does not constitute direct funding of religious institutions.

Valori Radonis stresses the importance of educational choice, particularly in rural areas, and believes that limiting options is detrimental to students. The family remains optimistic about the legal challenge and hopes for a resolution that supports parental choice and access to quality education, regardless of religious affiliation.
