A super PAC supporting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's presidential bid has launched a new mailer campaign in Iowa and South Carolina. The mailer, distributed by Never Back Down, features censored excerpts from the book "Gender Queer: A Memoir" by Maia Kobabe, a book DeSantis's administration removed from Florida schools due to its explicit content.
The mailer includes a content warning, alerting recipients to the sexually graphic nature of the material. It emphasizes that the excerpts are censored and that the uncensored version is even more graphic. The included excerpts reference topics such as sock stuffing and masturbation.

The mailer argues that DeSantis is the only candidate actively fighting against "woke corporations" and protecting children from inappropriate material. It states, "Only DeSantis is battling and winning against woke corporations, trying to brainwash our kids — even the most powerful ones in his own backyard. Ron DeSantis is the only leader standing up to the Woke elites for parents and kids."

While the mailer includes select excerpts, it omits other sections of "Gender Queer" that contain cartoon depictions of sex toys, gay sex, and other graphic content.
Last year, DeSantis championed legislation (HB 1467) mandating that only approved books, vetted by certified media specialists, be available in schools. Democrats have criticized this move as book banning, a claim DeSantis denies. He argues that it is about ensuring age-appropriate materials are available to students.

In March, during a press conference where DeSantis displayed explicit content from some of the removed books, several local media outlets reportedly cut away from the live feed. The White House recently announced the appointment of a "book ban" coordinator to address the removal of books from school libraries, a move that drew criticism from conservatives. The White House argues that removing books can create a hostile environment for certain students, particularly those in the LGBTQI+ community.
