Authorities in northern Indiana are investigating the deaths of three patients at an addiction treatment facility, along with a suspected overdose involving a fourth individual, all within a single week. The St. Joseph County Police Department is collaborating with the county coroner's office to examine these incidents, which occurred at Praxis Landmark Recovery, a men's drug and alcohol rehabilitation center near Mishawaka.
The first death, that of 19-year-old Seth M. Jones, was reported on July 3rd. The following day, 46-year-old William Breda was also found deceased. Both men were discovered in rooms across from one another. Just hours later, a 22-year-old man experienced a suspected overdose and required three doses of Narcan before being transported to a hospital.
On July 9th, a third death occurred involving a 28-year-old man. Initial findings suggest suicide, but toxicology and autopsy results are still pending. While drug overdose is suspected in all three fatalities, police are treating the circumstances as suspicious. Investigators have requested security footage and records from Landmark Recovery but had not yet received them as of mid-week.
The close timing of these incidents and the perceived lack of cooperation from the facility prompted a more thorough investigation, according to police. Landmark Recovery, a Tennessee-based company with treatment centers in multiple states, expressed sadness over the deaths and confirmed their cooperation with authorities and an internal investigation. They emphasized their commitment to providing quality care for individuals with Medicaid, a population often lacking adequate addiction recovery support. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration also expressed concern and indicated a review of reports from Landmark to determine appropriate action.
