After spending over three years in Russian detention, American teacher Marc Fogel has returned to U.S. soil, expressing profound gratitude for former President Donald Trump's role in securing his freedom. Fogel, who had been teaching history at the Anglo-American School in Moscow, was arrested in August 2021 at a Russian airport for possessing medically prescribed marijuana. He was sentenced to 14 years. Images released by the White House show a jubilant Fogel draped in an American flag upon his arrival. Fogel's release followed negotiations between the Trump administration and Russian authorities. While the specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, former National Security Advisor Michael Waltz confirmed an exchange took place, though the U.S.'s concession remains unknown. Trump downplayed the exchange, stating the U.S. gave up "not much." Upon landing, Fogel praised Trump as a "hero" and acknowledged the efforts of diplomats, senators, and representatives involved in his release. He expressed immense relief and called himself "the luckiest man on Earth." Fogel's family echoed his sentiments, thanking Trump and others for their tireless work in bringing him home.
