GOP Strategists Discuss Voting Rules and Demographic Shifts in 2024 Election

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

Former Attorney General Bill Barr recently advised Republicans to strategically navigate state voting regulations in the upcoming presidential election. He emphasized the importance of competing effectively within established rules while opposing measures that undermine the core principles of democratic voting. Barr suggested that voting should ideally occur within a limited timeframe to ensure decisions are based on consistent information.

Barr's comments came during a discussion on "Sunday Night in America" focused on evolving voter demographics and Republican strategy for 2024. He advocated for a reasonable voting period, ideally within a week of the election, to prevent significant shifts in information influencing voter decisions. He also cautioned against excessively extended voting periods, particularly with mail-in ballots.

The roundtable also included Fox News host Dana Perino and contributors Katie Pavlich and Deroy Murdock. The panel explored the reported shift of traditionally Democratic demographics, like Hispanic and Asian American voters, towards the Republican Party. Murdock suggested that the Republican stance on school choice might be attracting Black voters who prioritize educational opportunities for their children, contrasting this with the Democrats' perceived alignment with teachers' unions.

Perino raised concerns about the Republican Party's challenge in attracting young women, particularly single women. She emphasized the importance of adapting messaging strategies for different demographics and addressing issues like abortion, which she anticipates will be significant in the 2024 election. Pavlich stressed the need for Republicans to control their narrative, arguing that they have often allowed Democrats to frame them as extremists on issues like abortion. She suggested that connecting with voters on a personal level, focusing on issues directly impacting their lives, is crucial.
