In a bittersweet turn of events, the Atlanta Braves designated infielder Charlie Culberson for assignment on Father's Day, just hours before his father was scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Culberson, who had recently been called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on May 19th, hadn't yet participated in a major league game this season.
Following Culberson's release, the honor of the first pitch went to the father of Braves outfielder Michael Harris II. Harris himself had a stellar performance in the Braves' 14-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies, going 5-for-5 and scoring three runs.
Culberson, a first-round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2007, made his major league debut with the team in 2012. He was subsequently traded to the Colorado Rockies before the 2013 season in exchange for Marco Scutaro, where he spent two seasons. His career also includes stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-2017) and three seasons with the Braves (2018-2020), where he hit .265 with 17 home runs and 63 RBIs. He then played for the Texas Rangers from 2021 to 2022.
Before his designation, Culberson was batting .204 with a .489 OPS and one home run in 24 games with the Gwinnett Stripers.
