Race Against Time: Dwindling Oxygen Supply for Missing Titanic Submersible

Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

A frantic search is underway for the OceanGate Titan submersible, which vanished during a dive to the Titanic wreckage site. The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Tuesday afternoon that the vessel has approximately 40-41 hours of breathable air remaining, prompting an urgent race against time.

Captain Jamie Fredrick, the U.S. Coast Guard First District response coordinator, addressed reporters in Boston, stating that the search, assisted by the Canadian Coast Guard, covers an area "larger than the state of Connecticut." Despite ongoing efforts, no trace of the Titan has been found.

Based on the initial disappearance report on Sunday morning, the oxygen supply is estimated to last until Thursday morning. The Coast Guard initiated search and rescue operations immediately upon receiving the report Sunday evening, deploying both surface and air assets.

The search operation involves C-130 aircraft conducting visual and radar searches, complemented by P-3 aircraft deploying sonar buoys. Newly released images, posted on Instagram by Action Aviation, depict the Titan on the surface shortly before its descent, offering a glimpse into the moments preceding the submersible’s disappearance.
