Concerns about TikTok's data collection practices and potential security risks have led many to seek safer ways to use the platform. While government agencies and even entire states have banned the app, its popularity, especially among teens, remains undeniable.
The core issue lies in TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, being subject to Chinese laws that could compel them to share user data with the government. This data can include a wide range of information, from browsing history and location to facial recognition data and voice prints.
Simply accessing TikTok through a web browser doesn't eliminate tracking risks. A more effective approach involves using a separate, low-cost device – often referred to as a "burner phone." This doesn't need to be an expensive smartphone; a basic Android device will suffice.
The key is to set up this phone without linking it to any of your primary accounts. Avoid logging into your regular Google account, Apple ID, personal email, or any other accounts connected to sensitive information. Instead, create a brand new email address specifically for this phone and the associated TikTok account.
While this method creates a barrier between your personal data and TikTok, it's still important to be mindful of what you share on the platform. Connecting the burner phone to your home Wi-Fi eliminates the need for a separate data plan.
However, connecting any new device to your home network introduces potential risks to other devices on the same network. To mitigate this, set up a guest network. This allows the burner phone to access the internet without direct access to other devices on your primary network. Most routers offer a "Guest Network" option within their settings, accessible either through an app or a web interface.
