New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty's generosity in giving up his jersey number 22 to teammate Juan Soto has been handsomely rewarded. Soto, who recently signed a massive contract with the Mets, expressed his gratitude by gifting Baty a brand new SUV.
"I truly value the number 22. It's the first one I've consistently worn throughout my career," Soto explained while presenting the vehicle, complete with a bow on the hood. "I felt compelled to give you something special in return." Baty, clearly surprised and delighted, responded, "This is incredible!"
Soto's monumental contract with the Mets is a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million deal. The agreement includes a clause allowing Soto to opt out after five years, at which point the Mets have the option to increase the total value to $805 million.
The number 22 has been a constant for Soto throughout his time with the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, and New York Yankees. Now, as a key addition to the Mets, he'll continue to wear it as the team aims to build upon their surprising NLCS run from the previous season.
While Baty's generosity earned him a new car, the Mets' decision to re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso might impact Baty's chances of securing a spot on the opening day roster. With Alonso's return and Mark Vientos' strong performance last season, competition for the third base position is fierce. Baty appeared in 50 games last season, hitting .229 with four home runs.
