Prior to this espionage conviction, Spector, a former executive at a medical equipment company, was sentenced in September 2022 to three and a half years for facilitating bribes to an aide of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. The aide, Anastasia Alekseyeva, received a 12-year sentence in April for accepting bribes in the form of two luxurious vacations abroad. Dvorkovich served as deputy prime minister under Dmitry Medvedev from 2012 to 2018 and currently leads the international chess federation FIDE.
