Trump Bans Transgender Athletes from Women's Sports, Targets 2028 Olympics

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Former President Donald Trump signed an executive order prohibiting transgender women from participating in girls' and women's sports. This order extends to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with Trump stating he would direct then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to deny visas to transgender women athletes attempting to enter the U.S. for the Games.

This action aimed to pressure organizations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the NCAA to adopt similar policies. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the widespread support for this stance, highlighting the voices of female athletes who have spoken out against transgender inclusion in women's sports.

The issue of transgender eligibility in sports gained prominence during the Paris Olympics, with two female boxers, Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, winning gold medals after previously being disqualified for failing gender eligibility tests. The IOC, however, maintained that both athletes were biologically female. Other instances, such as Laurel Hubbard's participation in weightlifting and Quinn's identification as nonbinary and transgender, further fueled the debate.

With a potential change in IOC leadership, Trump's vision might gain traction. Sebastian Coe, a candidate for IOC president, has expressed his opposition to transgender inclusion in women's sports and suggested a potential ban. As the head of World Athletics, Coe implemented regulations excluding transgender women who have undergone male puberty from competing in the female category. He indicated that a similar policy might be adopted by the IOC if he were elected.

A United Nations study reported that nearly 900 biological female athletes have lost medals to transgender competitors. The study, titled "Violence against women and girls in sports," found that over 600 female athletes missed out on medals in over 400 competitions across 29 sports, totaling more than 890 lost medals. The report highlighted the displacement of female athletes due to the introduction of mixed-sex categories.
