Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer has resolved his defamation case against The Athletic and former reporter Molly Knight. The lawsuit stemmed from an article published in 2021 regarding a restraining order filed against Bauer. A source close to the situation confirmed to Fox News Digital that the settlement includes revisions to the original article and the removal of related tweets by Knight.
The source emphasized that Bauer's primary concern was not monetary compensation, but rather upholding journalistic standards and verification practices. The New York Times, which owns The Athletic, confirmed the addition of an editor's note to the article, acknowledging the court's prior finding that the original reporting accurately reflected court proceedings.
The lawsuit centered on The Athletic's reporting of a restraining order filed by a woman in San Diego who alleged injuries resulting from a sexual encounter with Bauer, which he maintained was consensual. The initial report mentioned "signs" of a skull fracture but did not include information from a CT scan that refuted this. The editor's note now clarifies that the CT scan showed no evidence of a skull fracture, explicitly stating that The Athletic did not intend to suggest otherwise.
Last year, MLB suspended Bauer for violating its domestic violence and sexual assault policy based on the California woman's claims, though an arbitrator later reduced the suspension. Bauer was not criminally charged and denied the allegations. More recently, a woman in Arizona made new accusations against Bauer, which his legal team has also denied, filing a countersuit alleging extortion.
Bauer is currently playing for the Yokohama BayStars in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league.
