Remembering Jim Turner: NFL Kicking Legend and Super Bowl Champion

The football world mourns the loss of Jim Turner, a celebrated kicker who left an indelible mark on the NFL. Turner, who passed away at the age of 82, was a two-time Pro Bowler and played a crucial role in the New York Jets' stunning Super Bowl III victory against the Baltimore Colts. The Denver Broncos, where Turner spent the latter part of his career, announced his passing on Monday.

Turner's professional football journey began with the Jets in 1964, where he played until 1970. He then joined the Broncos, playing from 1971 to 1979. By the time he retired, Turner held the impressive distinction of being the NFL's second-highest scorer and had even garnered American Football League Player of the Year votes in 1969.

During his time with the Broncos, Turner contributed to the team's three playoff appearances between 1977 and 1979, including a Super Bowl XII appearance in 1977. The Broncos organization released a statement expressing their deep sorrow at Turner's passing, highlighting his vital role in establishing the team's winning tradition in the 1970s and his key contributions to their first Super Bowl team.

Beyond his on-field achievements, the Broncos' statement also acknowledged Turner's commitment to mentoring and supporting young people after his playing career, emphasizing the lasting legacy he leaves within the community. The organization extended its condolences to Turner's wife, Mary Kay, his daughters Lisa, Chris, and Alison, and the entire Turner family.

A testament to his impact on the Broncos, Turner was inducted into the team's Ring of Fame in 1988, becoming the first kicker in franchise history to receive this honor. Over his remarkable career, spanning 228 games, Turner successfully kicked 304 field goals and 521 extra points.
