Pieces of the OceanGate Titan submersible, which tragically imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreckage, have been brought ashore. The U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday the recovery of what they believe to be human remains from the wreckage site.
Following collaboration with international investigative bodies, the Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) plans to transport the recovered evidence on a U.S. Coast Guard cutter to a U.S. port for further examination and testing. American medical professionals will then conduct a formal analysis of the presumed human remains.
Captain Jason Neubauer, Chair of the MBI, emphasized the importance of the recovered evidence in determining the cause of the catastrophe. He expressed gratitude for the international cooperation in retrieving and preserving the evidence from the extreme depths. Neubauer stressed the significant work ahead to understand the factors that led to the Titan's implosion and prevent future tragedies.
The Titan lost communication with its surface vessel on June 18th and was found destroyed on June 22nd. All five people on board are presumed dead. Portions of the wreckage were unloaded from a ship in St. John's Harbor, Newfoundland, Canada on Wednesday. The submersible imploded approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes into its descent to the Titanic.
