Two teenagers in Oregon are facing murder and robbery charges after allegedly shooting and killing a man who intervened during a grocery store robbery. The incident occurred at a Fred Meyer store in Portland's Hazelwood neighborhood on January 13th. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 3:50 p.m. and found 47-year-old Jonathan Trent with a gunshot wound. He later died at a local hospital. Initial investigations suggest Trent was shot while attempting to stop the robbery.

Jonathan Trent, 47, was killed while trying to stop a robbery at a Portland grocery store.

On January 23rd, police announced the arrests of a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old in connection with the shooting. A third 15-year-old, an acquaintance of the other two, was also arrested for a separate robbery that took place on January 1st. Authorities believe the 16-year-old suspect may be linked to a series of four other robberies in the area during the first two weeks of January.

Investigators connected the teens to the shooting after uncovering links between several crimes committed in the 48 hours following the incident. Sgt. Matt Jacobsen of the Portland Police Department's major crimes unit expressed concern about the involvement of young people in such violent crimes, highlighting the accessibility of firearms as a contributing factor.

The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office is currently determining whether the two teens charged with murder will be tried as adults. All three teens are being held at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Facility. Their identities have not been released due to their age.
