Susan Smith Denied Parole: Prison Calls Reveal Media Contact Attempts Before Disciplinary Action

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Newly obtained prison call recordings reveal that convicted killer Susan Smith spoke about declining media requests weeks before facing disciplinary action for communicating with a documentary filmmaker. The 53-year-old, who drowned her two sons in 1994, was denied parole on November 20th, partly due to this infraction. In an August 13th call, Smith mentioned discarding a letter from a national media outlet, stating she wouldn't engage with them even if permitted. She also described a handwritten letter from a stranger in California, expressing skepticism and likely discarding it. These calls predate her August 26th charge and October 3rd conviction for communicating with a crime victim/witness. Smith's conversations with the filmmaker involved potential interviews, documentary filming, and payment discussions. They also delved into the specifics of her crime, including details about the car and her initial plans. This communication led to a 90-day loss of phone, tablet, and canteen privileges. South Carolina Department of Corrections policy prohibits phone or in-person interviews, but allows written correspondence. Smith had provided the filmmaker with contact information for family, friends, and victims, including her ex-husband. The filmmaker had also deposited funds into Smith's prison account. During her parole hearing, Smith expressed remorse for her actions, but the board's denial cited the severity of the crime and her disciplinary record. Smith's sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, were drowned in John D. Long Lake on October 25, 1994. Smith, then 22, strapped them into her car and let it roll into the lake. She was convicted on July 22, 1995, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
