Stallions, Maulers Set for USFL Championship Showdown

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The USFL season culminates this Saturday with the championship game, featuring the reigning champion Birmingham Stallions and the surprising Pittsburgh Maulers. The Stallions, aiming for their second consecutive title, boast a high-powered offense led by league MVP Alex McGough. McGough, who stepped in after an injury to last year's championship quarterback J'Mar Smith, has had a stellar season, topping the USFL in passing touchdowns with 20.

McGough's favorite target, tight end Jace Sternberger, also had a remarkable season, leading the league in receiving touchdowns. The Stallions' defense, anchored by cornerback Nate Brooks, Brian Allen, and linebacker Scooby Wright III, will be key in their championship pursuit.

The Maulers, on the other hand, have defied expectations. After finishing with the worst record in the 2022 season, they've made a dramatic turnaround under new head coach Ray Horton, securing the North Division title. Quarterback Troy Williams has emerged as a dual-threat weapon, accumulating both passing and rushing touchdowns. Their defense, spearheaded by All-USFL cornerback Mark Gilbert, linebacker Kyahva Tezino, and safety Arnold Tarpley, has been instrumental in their success. Defensive coordinator Jarren Horton, son of head coach Ray Horton, has earned recognition as the league’s first Assistant Coach of the Year.
