Staff Departures Continue for Senator Fetterman Amidst Independent Streak

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) is experiencing further staff turnover as he continues to solidify his image as an occasionally unconventional Democrat. Two key aides, Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director Tré Easton and Communications Director Charlie Hills, have recently left Fetterman's office, according to reports.

Easton expressed gratitude for the opportunity to establish a policy team and contribute to a legislative agenda he believes serves as a model for Democratic governance. These departures follow a series of earlier staff changes in Fetterman's office. In early 2024, three communications staffers resigned within a month. Joe Calvello, Nicholas Gavio, and Emma Mustion moved on to roles with other Democratic lawmakers and a progressive political party.

Following these resignations, Carrie Adams became Fetterman's communications chief, but her presence diminished after publicly disagreeing with the senator's position on Israel in August 2024. It was later reported that Adams had left Fetterman's employ.

Fetterman has garnered attention for his distinctive communication style and his willingness to collaborate with Republicans, particularly on matters related to Israel. He has indicated a receptiveness to former President Trump's suggestion of annexing Gaza and placing it under U.S. administration. Additionally, he has deviated from his party on immigration policy, becoming the first Democrat to co-sponsor the Laken Riley Act, a bill considered stringent by many Democrats.

Fetterman has also supported Trump cabinet nominees on several occasions, sometimes being the sole Democrat to do so. Fetterman's office has not yet issued a statement regarding the recent staff departures.
