Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old software engineer, was apprehended at a Pennsylvania McDonald's after a witness identified him from police-circulated images. A source close to the investigation revealed to Fox News Digital that Mangione possessed a firearm and silencer similar to those used in the Wednesday attack, along with four counterfeit identification cards. One of the IDs matched the name used to check into an Upper West Side hostel, according to the New York Post.

A senior law enforcement official disclosed to the New York Times that Mangione's handwritten notes detailed grievances against healthcare companies, accusing them of prioritizing profits over patient care. Mangione was reportedly using a laptop at the Altoona fast food restaurant when apprehended. This mirrored surveillance footage from a New York McDonald's before the shooting, where a person of interest was also seen using a laptop, with a source noting a resemblance in their eyebrows.

Mangione, originally from Towson, MD, was the valedictorian of his Baltimore prep school class in 2016 and earned a Master's degree in engineering and computer science from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been employed as a software developer at TrueCar Inc. for the past four years, according to his LinkedIn profile. Online activity suggests Mangione's alignment with anti-capitalist and climate change movements, as well as his dissatisfaction with the American healthcare system. While taken to the Altoona Police Department, he has not been formally identified by law enforcement as Thompson's shooter. NYPD officials arrived at the Altoona department several hours after Mangione's detainment. Altoona is situated approximately 100 miles east of Pittsburgh.
