Ritchie Torres Emerges as Potential Challenger to Hochul in 2026 New York Gubernatorial Race

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

New York Congressman Ritchie Torres is making waves with his increasingly vocal criticism of Democratic leadership, fueling speculation about a potential gubernatorial run against incumbent Kathy Hochul in 2026. Torres, a Democrat representing New York's 15th congressional district, has publicly challenged Hochul's handling of state affairs and condemned progressive criminal justice policies. His recent comments blaming the far left for perceived failures within the Democratic Party have further intensified the spotlight on a possible primary showdown.

Torres' spokesperson confirmed he is considering a gubernatorial bid, aiming to finalize his decision by mid-2025. His recent actions, including criticizing New York City Mayor Eric Adams for employing a staffer accused of removing posters of Israeli hostages, underscore his willingness to challenge established figures within his own party. He also publicly denounced both Adams and Hochul for what he deemed their "complicity" in a stabbing incident that resulted in three fatalities. Furthermore, Torres has voiced concerns about New York's business climate, arguing that existing regulations stifle economic growth.

Rep. Nick Langworthy, a Republican, acknowledged that Torres' critiques echo concerns voiced by his own party about the state government's performance. However, he characterized Torres' criticism of progressive policies as strategic positioning in response to Hochul's perceived weaknesses and the perceived success of Trump's platform. Torres, formerly a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, departed earlier this year due to disagreements concerning Israel.

Hochul, in response to Torres' criticisms, stated she was "a little busy" governing and suggested that those focused on elections two years away should prioritize their current responsibilities.
