Missouri Sees Rise in Holiday Weekend Fatalities: 8 Road Deaths and 4 Drownings Reported

Over the Fourth of July weekend, Missouri experienced a tragic surge in fatalities, with eight lives lost on the state's roads and four individuals drowning in its waterways, according to a Wednesday report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The incidents began on Saturday with the drowning of 56-year-old James Roy from Kansas City at Lake of the Ozarks. The same day, 41-year-old Hamsa Mohamed of St. Louis lost their life after jumping from a cliff into the Big River in Jefferson County. Tragically, the drownings continued into Tuesday with the death of a 6-year-old boy at Lake of the Ozarks and 22-year-old Carlos Antonio of St. Joseph who drowned while swimming at Smithville Lake. The 6-year-old's name has not been released.

Missouri Reports on Holiday Weekend Fatalities

The highway patrol also reported a significant number of traffic fatalities. Three of the eight road deaths occurred on Saturday, with the remaining five taking place on Tuesday. Among the victims was a 13-year-old boy who died near Stanberry in northwestern Missouri on Saturday when the vehicle he was traveling in veered off the road and overturned multiple times.

Over the course of the extended holiday weekend, which commenced Friday night and concluded Tuesday, state troopers responded to 390 traffic accidents. They also made 116 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and 21 drug-related arrests.
