Maldives Implements Departure Tax for Tourists

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The Maldives, a popular South Asian island destination known for its luxurious resorts and pristine waters, has introduced a departure tax for tourists. Implemented in 2022, this tax applies to both Maldivian citizens and international visitors departing from any Maldivian airport. The fee structure varies based on the class of travel.

Economy class travelers will face a $50 departure tax, while Maldivian citizens pay a reduced rate of $12. Those flying business class will incur a $120 fee, with first-class passengers paying $240. Private jet departures are subject to the highest tax, set at $480. These rates apply equally to both citizens and tourists.

In addition to the departure tax, the Maldives also levies taxes on accommodations, including hotels, resorts, and tourist vessels. This existing tax is set to double from $6 to $12 starting in January. This move follows a trend of tourist destinations implementing taxes to manage tourism levels, with examples like Greece planning a tax for cruise visitors to popular islands and Bali introducing a fee for foreign tourists to encourage sustainable tourism.
