Indiana AG Sues County Sheriff for Non-Cooperation with Federal Immigration Authorities

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has initiated legal action against the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, citing their refusal to collaborate with federal immigration enforcement. Rokita held a press conference in South Bend on Friday, explaining that Sheriff William Redman and his department consistently decline to inform ICE about the release of individuals residing in the country illegally, and also disregard ICE detainers. These detainers are requests from ICE to local authorities to temporarily hold individuals until federal agents can assume custody.

Rokita argues that this lack of cooperation creates a sanctuary for individuals who should be deported and expresses concern that it could attract more undocumented immigrants to St. Joseph County, potentially leading to increased crime. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the law and holding law enforcement officials accountable. Rokita stated that numerous attempts to address the issue with the sheriff have been unsuccessful. While affirming his support for law enforcement in Indiana, he stressed the importance of accountability. He pledged to continue pursuing this matter until the law is enforced and the safety of Indiana residents is prioritized.

The Attorney General indicated a willingness to withdraw the lawsuit if the Sheriff’s Department agrees to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. He also mentioned an ongoing investigation into potential labor trafficking networks within the state, prompted by reports from residents about a surge of migrants in their communities. Fox News Digital has contacted both Sheriff Redman and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department for a response. This legal action coincides with President Trump’s renewed focus on deportations, with the White House reporting the removal of hundreds of undocumented immigrants since his recent inauguration.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted on X (formerly Twitter) the administration's recent arrest of 538 individuals residing in the country illegally, including individuals suspected of terrorism, gang affiliation, and sex crimes against minors. She further emphasized the ongoing large-scale deportation operation.
