Newly appointed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's fashion choices, specifically her penchant for cowboy hats, have ignited a flurry of opinions on social media platforms. Following a visit to the Texas border where she participated in a ride-along with the Horse Patrol unit and received a Border Patrol cowboy hat as a gift, Noem sported the hat during a subsequent appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press." This prompted a range of reactions, from accusations of "cosplay" and inappropriate attire to defenses highlighting the normalcy of such headwear in Noem's home state of South Dakota.

Critics questioned the appropriateness of the hat for a television appearance, with some using terms like "cringe" and "not a serious country" to express their disapproval. Journalist Aaron Rupar referred to her as "Cosplay Kristi." Others criticized what they perceived as an obsession with aesthetics.

Conversely, numerous users defended Noem, emphasizing the everyday practicality and cultural significance of cowboy hats in regions like South Dakota, where she owns and operates a ranch. They argued that her attire was authentic to her background and not a contrived "costume." Some pointed out the seeming double standard where similar scrutiny isn't applied to men wearing hats or protective vests.

DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin defended Noem, stating that the Secretary spent her first week engaging with border agents and participating in an ICE operation. She emphasized Noem's pride in wearing attire representative of DHS agents and criticized those who focused on clothing over substantive policy issues like immigration.
