A high school basketball game in Calhoun, Georgia, descended into chaos earlier this month after a heated exchange between players escalated into a physical altercation. The incident, which occurred on January 3rd during a game between Sonoraville High School and Rockmart High School, was captured on video and quickly spread across social media.
The footage appears to show a Rockmart player shoving a Sonoraville athlete to the floor, then striking him in the face as he gets back up. The same Rockmart player is then seen punching another Sonoraville player who rushed towards the unfolding brawl. The video captures the audible reactions from spectators, with some individuals leaving the stands in an apparent attempt to intervene.

According to a report from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, the Rockmart player who allegedly initiated the physical altercation claimed he was provoked by repeated racial slurs from a Sonoraville player. The report indicates that the teenager faces two charges of simple battery. The fight broke out during the third quarter of the game.

As of yet, neither Rockmart High School nor Sonoraville High School have released official statements regarding the incident.
