As California grapples with devastating wildfires across multiple counties, criticism mounts against government officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, for perceived shortcomings in preparedness. With a reported death toll of at least ten and widespread destruction of homes and buildings, residents and prominent figures are voicing their concerns.
Aurora Culpo, podcast host and Manhattan Beach resident, who evacuated with her children, criticized the state's response. "This disaster was foreseeable," Culpo stated, emphasizing the awareness of fire risk and the perceived inadequacy of preparations. She called for accountability and resignations from officials, arguing that their "lack of competence" resulted in significant loss of life, property, and resources.
Culpo expressed strong disapproval of what she sees as Newsom's attempts to deflect blame by characterizing the fires as a local issue. She stood by her social media post holding those who voted for Newsom's re-election accountable. Culpo also echoed sentiments expressed by former President Trump regarding the "gross incompetence" of officials in handling the crisis.
While supporting various social and environmental causes, Culpo prioritized safety and questioned the allocation of resources, citing alleged expenditures on inmate gender-affirming surgeries while water management practices are impacted by endangered species protections. She argued that the state's priorities are "completely out of whack."
With ongoing fire fighting efforts and concerns about air quality, Culpo plans to relocate her children temporarily to San Francisco. The wildfires continue to raise questions about disaster preparedness and government response in California.
