Escaped Pennsylvania Prisoner Michael Burham Believed to Be Receiving Outside Help in Manhunt

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Authorities are intensifying their search for escaped prisoner Michael Burham, an Army veteran with survivalist skills, who broke out of the Warren County jail in Pennsylvania on Thursday night. Law enforcement officials suspect Burham is receiving external assistance as the manhunt, spanning across state lines into New York, enters its fifth day. Burham, facing kidnapping charges and suspected of murder and rape in New York, escaped by using bedsheets as a rope to descend from the jail's rooftop. He was last seen wearing a denim jacket, orange-striped jumpsuit, and Crocs, but officials believe he may have changed clothes. Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens stated they are "prepared to prosecute anyone who does offer him assistance." Considered armed and dangerous, Burham is believed to be hiding in or around Warren County. Although police have investigated potential campsites and break-ins, no definitive link to Burham has been established. The search involves over 150 officers from various agencies, and the U.S. Marshals are offering a reward for information leading to his capture. Burham's extensive military background as a water treatment specialist and utilities equipment repairer is adding to the complexity of the search. This escape follows a previous manhunt in May, which ended with Burham's arrest in South Carolina. He was apprehended after allegedly kidnapping a Pennsylvania couple and driving them to South Carolina, following the suspected murder of Kala Hodgkin in New York. A note found in a stolen car during his May arrest, addressed to his father, stated, "I'm not sorry for what I did, however I do feel terrible about the children."
